In a move shaking the Kratom community, Louisiana lawmakers have approved a bill banning Kratom statewide. After votes of 86–6 in the House and 26–11 in the Senate, the bill was sent to Governor Jeff Landry, who signed it into law. The ban will officially take effect on August 1, 2025.
This legislation, sponsored by Senator Jay Morris and presented in the House by Rep. Debbie Villio, paints Kratom as dangerous and unregulated. Villio called Kratom “cloaked in deception” and claimed it was contributing to youth harm. She went as far as to call it “gas station heroin,” despite limited research to support these claims.
Opponents like Rep. Peter Egan fought back, noting that over 300,000 Louisianians use Kratom responsibly. He argued that “those who use leaf Kratom want to live normal, stable lives.” His proposed amendments to preserve access to unadulterated Kratom were rejected.
Why This Ban Matters
This is the first state-level Kratom ban to pass since 2017—a troubling signal for the entire industry. If left unchallenged, it sets a precedent that other states may follow. It also raises questions about political motivations, especially given that Senator Morris has accepted significant campaign contributions from pharmaceutical interests known to oppose natural alternatives like Kratom.
This underscores the importance of unified advocacy. Without action, we risk more misinformation-based bans that hurt responsible consumers and push Kratom into the shadows rather than regulating it safely.
