Maeng Da Kratom: Get To Know This Popular Strain

December 16, 2021 by Jacob

Some Kratom lovers try to rank strains from “best” to “worst” or from “strongest” to “weakest.” On those lists, Maeng Da Kratom often shows up at the top of these lists because of how popular it is among Kratom fans.

Even though ranking Kratom is very subjective, it’s interesting that so many people who enjoy it rank Maeng Da so highly. What is it about this unique strain that makes it stand out from other strains?

Here at Left Coast, we’re happy to stock many different Kratom strains, and our customers enjoy choosing from our wide selection. Maeng Da Kratom is just one of those strains, and today, we’ll look at some of the variants on this strain.

What Is Kratom?

Kratom is a type of natural substance used by some people as a functional food. The leaves of this tree have been used in regions where it grows natively for many years as a versatile plant ally. The trees grow natively in many regions of South East Asia, including Thailand, but it is also cultivated in other areas as well.

Kratom leaves are dried, processed, and then blended into various natural products to be used by consumers. There are many different varieties on the market, and today’s focus is Maeng Da Kratom.

Kratom leaves contain organic compounds known as alkaloids. In particular, two alkaloids occur at higher concentrations than others and are well known by Kratom enthusiasts: mitragynine and 7-hydroxymitragynine.

Why Are There Different Kratom Strains?

Depending on where Kratom leaves grow, how they are cultivated, when they are harvested, and several other factors, the actual chemical composition of the plant can vary. Like other plants, there isn’t a specific composition that will be found in every single plant. Rainfall, soil content, wind, weather, and other things all change the composition of Kratom leaves.

Additionally, how leaves are picked and dried can lead to different chemical developments in the final product.

All of these varying factors are why there are so many different strains of Kratom. Some strains have similar compositions and effects, while others are very different.

Do People Use Different Strains?

Depending on a user’s particular needs and wants, they might have a specific strain of Kratom that they prefer. Most users, however, like to vary between a few different strains to keep their tolerance for any particular strain lower.

Some people prefer Kratom with lower alkaloid levels, while others prefer those with very high levels. Ultimately, it’s up to you to decide what will fit your needs best.

What Is Maeng Da Kratom?

Maeng Da Kratom is one of the most well-known strains, but what exactly is this unique and sought-after variety?

Maeng Da roughly translates to “pimp grade” in Thai. This name was given to the best of the best Kratom strains by vendors, and it has been gradually adapted to be applied to many Thai strains of Kratom. The origins of this word are more likely to do with marketing than with ancient origins, but it is still a very useful moniker for identifying specific types of Kratom.

The high alkaloid content of various Maeng Da strains often helps them stand out above others when people think about what Kratom they enjoy most.

Is All Maeng Da Kratom From Thailand?

While the name of Maeng Da Kratom originates from a Thai word and maybe even from Thai farms, that doesn’t mean that every strain of Maeng Da Kratom comes from Thailand today. In fact, many strains do not come from Thailand at all.

Today, the industry uses the phrase Maeng Da Kratom more loosely. A strain that originated in Thailand might now be grown in different parts of the world, especially in Indonesia. The name gives a sense of the strain’s lineage, if not the exact geographic location where it was grown.

Ultimately, strains of this variety can be from a number of places and still be great examples of strong and balanced Kratom. Trying options from different vendors will allow you to explore the nuances that can be found in Kratom from around the world.

Left Coast Kratom Compares: CBD & Kratom

November 10, 2021 by Jacob

CBD and Kratom are two popular plant products that are quickly gaining a reputation for being great botanicals to try out. Most people are more familiar with CBD than Kratom, but both products are being seen in favorable ways worldwide.

Left Coast Kratom is proud to offer Kratom products, but we know that it can be confusing for some customers to know what to buy if they aren’t familiar with how this compares to something more familiar like CBD. CBD and Kratom are unique plant products with unique characteristics.

Today, learn more about them both to determine what you are interested in exploring.

Similarity #1: They’re Both Plant Products!

The first, and most obvious, similarity between Kratom and CBD is that both of these substances originate from plants. The plants that each product comes from are different, but the processes used to harvest, process, and extract the plants have some similarity.

Where It Differs: CBD

CBD is a cannabinoid. A cannabinoid is a specific compound found in cannabis and hemp plants. Cannabinoids are responsible for the effects that these plants have when smoked, eaten, or otherwise taken. Some cannabinoids, like THC, cause mind-altering effects like euphoria.

CBD, on the other hand, does not have the same type of psychoactive effect. Instead, CBD is frequently used in an isolated form as a botanical supplement. People find that CBD helps to relieve a number of conditions without causing the user to become high, so CBD has become widely used in both home remedies and the medical field.

Where It Differs: Kratom

Kratom, on the other hand, is the actual name of the plant as well as the product. Kratom trees are a type of evergreen tree that is native to some parts of Southeast Asia, including Thailand, Indonesia, and neighboring countries.

The leaves from these tall trees are harvested, dried, and processed to create Kratom powders and products. Kratom’s effects on the body are caused by alkaloids. Alkaloids are a compound found in many foods and plants. Caffeine, for instance, is an alkaloid found in many different plants.

The alkaloids found in Kratom are responsible for the botanical’s effects. Kratom is most often taken as a powder or a tea, but it can also be ingested in capsule form for easy serving.

Similarity #2: Effects

The reasons that people decide to try both CBD and Kratom are, in some cases, very similar. Those who want to take charge of their wellness or commit to a more natural lifestyle often consider adding both plant products to their daily routines.

Difference: CBD is Well-Studied

Thanks to an early interest by the scientific community, there have been a lot of studies done on CBD and its effects. It is the cannabinoid from cannabis plants that has been the most studied, and that is why it is a legal substance in most states today. CBD products are on sale around the country for this reason.

Difference: Kratom is Still Being Introduced

While Kratom plants and products have been studied for more than three decades, there have been significantly fewer studies on Kratom products when compared to CBD and other cannabis-based products.

This is mainly due to the difference in popularity, but there has also been a lot of pushback from the federal government against Kratom because it is not as familiar or common as some other botanicals.

Still, we know that alkaloids can have many positive and desirable effects on the body when used properly. The primary alkaloids in Kratom, known as mitragynine and 7-hydroxymitragynine, have been shown in early studies to be effective and beneficial. However, for Kratom to make it onto the open market to the degree that CBD is, more studies will need to be completed.

kratom tree growing

Similarity #3: Pushback

Depending on your age, you might remember a time when CBD and all cannabis-adjacent substances like it were looked at as very dangerous. This reaction by the public was largely due to propaganda campaigns in the late 20th century. It took many decades for advocates from the medical and science communities to prove that CBD was not a terrifying substance.

In a similar way, many people see Kratom as a dangerous substance at this time. This is largely due to a lack of information, but there is also an issue of no regulation of Kratom in some areas. When there is no law or regulation on natural botanical products, cheap sellers can cut corners and release dangerous products onto the market.

As time goes on and more advocates work to stabilize the Kratom community, positive growth will likely be seen in a similar way to what was seen within the CBD community many years ago.

Vaping Kratom: Why You Should Avoid This Dangerous Activity

August 26, 2021 by Jacob

It’s not uncommon to see people using vapes, also known as vaporizers, to enjoy smoking in a new way. These vapes can be used with various vape juices or concentrates, some of which contain substances like nicotine or CBD. People find vapes to be a faster, easier, and sometimes, safer, way to experience different things.

However, vaping Kratom is something that you should never do.

Why is vaping Kratom something that people are considering, and what is so dangerous about this activity?

Today, learn more about vaping, how vapes work, and why Kratom doesn’t work with that process. There are other alternatives to try instead; let’s talk about it.

Understanding Vaping

Vapes, also known as vaporizers or electronic cigarettes, are an electronic way of heating up substances to inhale their vapors. These handheld machines have changed since they were first introduced a number of years ago. Understanding how vapes work is important to understand why Kratom should not be vaped.

How Does Vaping Work?

Though there are different types of vapes, they all work in a similar fashion:

  1. The battery is turned on; this battery controls the heating element.
  2. E-juice is added to the atomizer, which is a small chamber in the vape.
  3. The coil, powered by the battery, heats up the juice rapidly so that it vaporizes.
  4. The vapor is inhaled through a mouthpiece by the user.

There are different types of champers, batteries, coils, mouthpieces, and juices that can be used in the vape’s construction. Some vapes work better than others, and some are safer than others to use.

There are even vapes that allow you to control the temperature of the coil as well as the length of time it takes to heat up the juice. These more advanced features come at a price, but those who use vapes regularly often find them worth the investment.

The key thing to remember is that the heating element heats at a very high temperature to vaporize, rather than burn, the juice. The vapors are then inhaled, and this is what is then exhaled as smoke.

What Things Can Be Vaped?

Depending on the construction of the vape, there are different types of vape juice that can be used in a vape.

Vape juices are made mostly of either vegetable glycerin or propylene glycol as the suspension agent; this is what allows the other ingredients to be heated up into a vapor. Vape juice may contain water, food flavorings, nicotine, and other ingredients as well. The makeup of the juice depends on what you are planning to vape.

Beyond nicotine, there are also vape juices that contain CBD. While it is possible to vape cannabis concentrates and components, these need to be vaped with specialty vaporizers that can handle herb and other suspension materials like wax. Trying to use these in a liquid vape will not work out well, and it could be dangerous.

Kratom: Can It Be Vaped?

Now that you know more about vaping, let’s answer today’s pressing question: can Kratom be vaped?

As of now, no. Kratom cannot be safely vaped because there aren’t any vaporizers made specifically to vaporize it, and there also aren’t any vape juices that have Kratom’s active chemical components in them. Without having products specifically made to be vaped, vaping Kratom through homemade juices could be dangerous.

Why Hasn’t Anyone Made Kratom Vape Juice?

Kratom fans might wonder why no one has made any Kratom specific vape products yet. When it comes down to it, we, like most Kratom vendors are focused on creating safe and tested products that our customers already enjoy.

Making vape juice with Kratom would require finding a way to make sure that the alkaloids stay active even after they are heated up. Alkaloids often deactivate when heating, so this would be a very difficult part of making Kratom vape juice. There is currently no way to know if alkaloids would be effective through a vape.

Additionally, all of the tests that have been done about Kratom have been done on Kratom that is ingested. This means that any knowledge we have of how Kratom works is based on eating or consuming Kratom, not vaping it.

Kratom’s effects are most frequently studied when they enter the bloodstream through the digestive system, and vaping Kratom would not work the same way.

Tested and True Kratom

Since there is currently not a clear answer about whether or not vaping Kratom is safe, it’s best to stick to using it in ways that have been tried and true for the last decade (or more).

If you want to see more studies being done about Kratom and different ways to enjoy it, now is a great time to get involved in Kratom advocacy. Advocates around the country are working together to ensure that Kratom can be safely and legally used in the US for the foreseeable future.

Groups like the American Kratom Association work to ensure that Kratom consumers are properly protected, and they also work to ensure that the latest research opportunities for Kratom are being taken.

Get To Know Yellow Vein Kratom (And How It’s Unique)

June 30, 2021 by Jacob

What do you know about the different color types of Kratom strains? Did you know that beyond the more common red, white, and green strains there is also yellow vein Kratom? Unlike the others, however, the color name does not always reflect the appearance of the leaves.

Learning about Kratom colors and where each strain type originates from is a great way to be more knowledgeable as you shop around. Many Kratom users like to mix up the strains that they use from week to week but don’t know enough about different types to do so easily.

By learning more about yellow vein Kratom today, you will be ready to make more informed choices going forward. Let’s get into it!

The Origins Different Kratom Colors

Kratom users may be familiar with where Kratom itself comes from: deciduous trees that grow in some areas of Southeast Asia. The tree prefers warm climates where there is a lot of rainfall, and it can grow to incredible heights of 70 feet or more.

Though those trees are where Kratom leaves, powders, and products come from, that simple description doesn’t tell people where the base colors of Kratom come from. Most people that have experienced Kratom know about red, white, and green Kratom. Where do the colored strains come from?

The colors of kratom strains are largely determined by when the leaves are harvested and how they are dried. Leaves that see more sunlight as they dry get darker, while less mature leaves that dry in the dark remain lighter. The actual color of the leaves’ veins does contribute slightly to the final product, but much of the color is determined through drying.

The Kratom Harvesting Process

To understand why drying is such a big part of the process, we need to talk about the overall harvesting process.

Kratom leaves are picked at different times throughout their lifespan, and leaves grown in different areas have different amounts of alkaloids. Once picked, the leaves are then dried. Leaves can be dried in the sun or they can be dried in the shade. Some leaves are dried in combination areas.

The way that leaves are dried leads to different alkaloid content as the plant matter changes in the drying process. Already varied leaves begin to vary even more once they are dried in different ways, and this contributes to the large number of Kratom strain types on the market today.

Yellow Vein Kratom: It’s Unique Story

Yellow Kratom has a unique story in that many people disagree about where the color comes from. Why is some Kratom powder yellow if the leaves on the trees are not yellow and do not have yellow veins?

A few ideas have circulated over the years about where the color of yellow Kratom comes from:

  • The leaves get yellow once they grow for longer, leading to yellow Kratom.
  • A blend of multiple colored Kratom powders is fermented to make it yellow.
  • The leaves are dried in a specific way to make the color yellow.

Which of these ideas do you think is the most accurate?

Banner For Shopping

Generally speaking, most yellow vein Kratom is processed with the third idea in mind. Specific types of leaves are dried in specific ways to lead to the color yellow. Much like white, green, and red Kratom, the drying process is a big part of the final color.

However, different yellow Kratom strains may have a different story. The best way to find out how a specific yellow strain came to be is to check with the vendor about its creation. It might be a proprietary blend, but they will still have some information about its derivation.

There are some blends that come out to be yellow that are made from a mixture of other Kratom strains, and there are a few strains that have been dried in a way that is closer to fermentation. Yellow Kratom is very unique in that way. Every strain has a unique story of how it came to be!

Reported Yellow Vein Kratom Properties

Those that haven’t tried yellow Kratom strains before might want to know more about what to expect. Is it similar to a red vein Kratom, or is it more like a white vein Kratom?

Most yellow Kratom is a blend that leads to moderate properties, often similar to a green strain. The alkaloid content is different depending on the exact drying process, however, so it is not possible to say for sure what a yellow Kratom strain will be like for users.

Experienced Kratom users have reported that yellow Kratom is typically a soothing variety that is less stimulating than other color strains. Still, it’s important to remember that every strain is different. Always make sure to start with a limited amount to ensure that you are prepared for any potential effects until you get to know a new strain.

Kratom Tea & More: 5 Unique Teas To Try

June 16, 2021 by Jacob

Did you know that there are hundreds of different teas?

While many teas are similar plants harvested and prepared in different ways, many teas are made from other plants. These botanical beverages, also referred to as herbal infusions or tisanes, are unique and lesser-known, but that doesn’t make them any less impactful worldwide.

Botanical teas made from herbs and plants around the world have unique properties. It’s time to learn more about these teas, including one of our favorites kratom tea, and see if any of them would be interesting for you to try. Let’s get into it.

Kratom Tea

Today’s list is going to start with our specialty: kratom tea. Kratom tea, made from leaves harvested from the kratom tree, is a specialty tea that has a long, rich history in parts of Southeast Asia. Locals in areas where kratom trees grow have long used this tea in ceremonies and as a daily drink to enhance productivity and unwind after the workday.

Today, this botanical tea is used worldwide by kratom lovers who have found the plant’s benefits to be amazing!

Kratom tea is easily brewed at home from the kratom tree’s leaves, and there are many different types of leaves. Depending on how the leaves are harvested and dried, the leaves have different chemical compositions. Once made into tea, the effects of the tea vary as well.

While kratom tea can be enjoyed iced, most people like it hot with honey and citrus mixed to help balance out the bitterness of the natural tea flavor. Beyond the great tea it makes, there are many cool things to learn about kratom.

Keep checking out more of our resources here at Left Coast Kratom to see what else is interesting to you. Definitely try our new kratom tea bags for an easy alternative to brewing kratom leaves.

Ginger Tea

Ginger is known for its intense, somewhat fiery flavor, but have you ever had ginger tea?

Many people know that ginger can ease tummy distress in things like ginger ale, but they don’t always realize that the powerful effects of ginger root can also be infused into teas. Ginger can be brewed as a completely herbal tea, but it is often mixed with green or black tea for a more interesting blend.

Ginger has long been shown to positively affect numerous body systems and to support healthy digestion. By drinking ginger tea, most people find that they get the comfort of a hot cup of tea and can ease their stomach and stress.

Ginger teas can be caffeine-free if they are completely herbal, but many people prefer ginger black teas that allow them to get the fiery punch of ginger alongside the boost of caffeine from the black tea. No matter how you choose to enjoy it, there’s no doubt that ginger root has a lot of unique benefits in tea form.

Guayusa

Guayusa tea, like kratom tea, is an herbal infusion that has been used for hundreds of years where the play grows native. Guayusa is made from the leaves of a specific variety of holly vines. In parts of South America, such as Ecuador, guayusa tea has increased alertness while providing beneficial plant compounds and vitamins.

Guayusa shares another considerable similarity with kratom: there have not yet been enough studies to learn all of the potentially positive effects of this botanical. While traditional use suggests that guayusa tea can boost energy and provide other benefits, it will be some time until we can confirm that with scientific studies rather than anecdotes.

Early evidence, however, suggests that guayusa should be considered very similar to other teas like green tea or yerba mate, with very few potential side effects for humans.

Yaupon

The next tea we’ll cover is native to North America: yaupon. Yaupon is a plant that grows wild in parts of the southern United States. It has been traditionally used by native cultures to brew a strong tea with a heady, herbal taste.

Yaupon tea is brewed from a type of holly, making it very similar to some of the other teas we have discussed today. The plant varieties are different, but there are some considerable similarities between the historical teas of South and North America.

Yaupon tea is known to have a small amount of caffeine. Like green tea, it’s an excellent option for a morning or midday cup of tea if you just need a little bit of extra pick-me-up.

Yerba Maté

Many people describe maté as a tea with the punchy caffeine hit of coffee. In reality, however, yerba maté is neither tea nor coffee. Instead, it is best described as an infusion. Teas are infusions, but they are typically made from herbal or tea leaf sources. On the other hand, Yerba maté is made from the leaves and twigs of a specific South American plant.

Yerba maté has been described to have a robust and vegetal taste. This taste can be hard to adjust to, but people often feel the same way about coffee when they first taste it.

The history of how yerba maté is communally drunk in certain South American countries is fascinating to many people. Usually, people gather together for conversation and communion over the yerba maté. They use a gourd, a special straw that filters the leaves out, and a thermos of hot water to brew and share the infusion continually.

Strain Comparison: Why Are There Different Kratom Colors?

June 3, 2021 by Jacob

Most plants develop into many varieties out of a single species. Just as there are different types of lilies that might grow in your garden, different Kratom types grow in the world. Variation in how the plants grow, where they grow, and how they are harvested leads to various Kratom strains appearing on the market.

One of the broadest ways to define these Kratom variations is by color: why are there different Kratom colors? Kratom enthusiasts often find they prefer certain colors of Kratom, but they aren’t always aware of why the colors exist at all.

Today, learn more about Kratom color variation, where it comes from, and how the powders differ because of this variation.

Kratom: What Is The Plant?

To get a better idea of how strains make a difference when it comes to Kratom, it’s best to start with some base knowledge of the plant itself.

Kratom is a type of evergreen tree native to Southeast Asian regions, including Malaysia, Borneo, Indonesia, Vietnam, Thailand, and Papua New Guinea. The hot, humid climates in these locations pair with highly fertile soil to make a perfect growing environment for Kratom.

The botanical product comes from the leaves of the Kratom trees. Kratom leaves are harvested, dried, and processed to make Kratom powder and other Kratom-based products. Kratom may interact but not bind with important receptors in the body, potentially leading to beneficial effects.

What Are Alkaloids?

Before getting into more specifics of different Kratom color strains, it’s essential to understand a bit more about alkaloids.

Alkaloids are found in many plants, not just in Kratom leaves. Caffeine is an alkaloid found in coffee beans and some tea leaves, for example. Alkaloids each react with the body differently, and each of these reactions can cause different physiological or psychological effects.

Kratom is known to contain more than 40 different alkaloids, and these alkaloids appear in different concentrations. The concentration varies for many reasons:

  • • Growing conditions
  • • Growing season
  • • Time of harvesting
  • • How they are harvested
  • • How the leaves are dried
  • • Soil composition
  • • Weather patterns

Individual alkaloids found in Kratom are being studied to learn more about their specific effects when consumed. Two compounds, however, are currently attributed for most of the effects seen with Kratom use: mitragynine and 7-hydroxymitragynine.

As the two most common alkaloids, the composition percentage of these two chemical compounds is written Kratom labeling for consumer knowledge.

Different Colors, Different Strains

As mentioned above, the exact chemical composition of Kratom varies depending on a wide variety of factors. The changes in those factors create the range of Kratom strains that we see on the market today.

Just as tea leaves are harvested at different times or ways to establish variety, the same can be done when Kratom leaves are harvested.

The simplest way to categorize Kratom strains is by their color. Kratom is found in red, green, yellow, and white varieties. Much of the distinction between these color strains lies in the number of alkaloids in each of them. Still, there are some other important distinctions to point out. Let’s find out more about the color strains and where they come from.

Red Vein Kratom

When Kratom leaves are harvested at full maturity, these leaves are known as red vein Kratom.

At this point in the growth cycle, Kratom leaves begin to put less energy into overall tree growth, and more of that energy stays in the leaves. This causes changes in the chemistry of the leaves and affects the balance of alkaloids in them.

Red vein Kratom has a mellow profile that is exceptionally high in the alkaloid Mitragynine. These leaves’ earthy tone sometimes looks brown in appearance; most see its color as a dark, muddy green.

Yellow Vein Kratom

Yellow vein Kratom is dried through a small-batch process that was initially popular in Vietnam and Thailand. The leaves selected for this process are typically mature, green leaves rich in alkaloids.

Here’s how the leaves are then processed:

  1. 1.) Green leaves are spread out evenly on drying racks.
  2. 2.) For several days, the leaves are left in direct sunlight.
  3. 3.) The sunlight breaks down the chlorophyll in the leaves, which causes the leaves to begin to yellow.
  4. 4.) The process is stopped after the leaves dry. Timing variation means there is a good variety in the number of potential yellow strains.

As you can see, harvesting and processing yellow vein Kratom is particularly time-intensive.

Green Vein Kratom

Green veins have one of the most balanced alkaloid profiles of all strain colors of Kratom.

To make green vein Kratom, leaves are typically harvested after budding is completed, before the leaves have completely matured. This created the vibrant color seen in the final processed form of green vein Kratom. Most green vein varieties contain a wide array of alkaloids but are very balanced in each alkaloid’s amounts because of the leaves’ age.

White Vein Kratom

White Vein Kratom is harvested earlier in the growing process than any other color of Kratom. Leaves that are still growing are harvested from Kratom trees and then allowed to dry. This process causes the alkaloid 7-hydroxymitragynine to be present in higher concentrations than in any other color strain.

While it is called white vein Kratom, the color of this Kratom powder is typically a light tan.
